A lot of us are aware that during disasters, Persons with Disabilities, especially the young ones, are seen to be more disadvantaged due to their limitations on mobility and awareness. It is with this reason why this National Disaster Resiliency Month, SM Cares extends its advocacy of educating children and youth with disabilities — SM Cares is the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of SM Prime Holdings.
I'm pretty sure when you hear the words "Happy to Serve", we already know the brand and the people behind the tagline. (wink, wink!) .... Isn't it that their tagline "happy to serve" suits just right especially with this kind of advocacies!
Held last July 9, 2018, at Hall 3 of the SMX Convention Center, MOA Complex in Pasay City, SM Cares organized the Disaster Preparedness Forum which focused on Children and Youth with Disabilities between 10-30 years old. The #SmEmergencyForum2018 is in partnership with MMDA and PHIVOLCS-DOST .
I personally witnessed and heard the SOPs and several reminders by the key speakers. The forum provided substantial information about the reality of a potential earthquake scenario in Metro Manila, as well as making them better prepared for disasters and calamities.
The attendees were young people who are blind, deaf, with physical/ orthopaedic impairments, with Down syndrome, Autism and those with rare disorders.
Resource persons were Dr. Renato Solidum, Jr. (Undersecretary for Disaster Risk Reduction Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and Officer-in-Charge Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) and Dr. Ted Esguerra, Operational Medicine Instructor International Disaster Response Network. UNICEF Philippines Country Representative Ms. Lotta Sylwander is also one of the guests for the forum.
